– Sold OutDomaine Paterianakis’ range of 3.14 is the first range of natural wines to have been produced in Crete. Unfiltered, with no added sulphites, they are made of indigenous varieties that best represent the diversity of the island. Vidiano is the major white variety of the island. It has often been compared to Chardonnay, for its aromatic palette, its ability to age gracefully and its compatibility with oak ageing. Wines made of Vidiano are of moderate acidity with complex aromas of yellow stone fruit such as peach, apricot and melon. The grape is mostly cultivated around the areas of Rethymno and Heraklion. It thrives in modest fertility, dry, calcareous and well-drained soils.
The Domaine vineyards are organically cultivated, consisting of un-grafted vines. Tending the vines daily, the growers taste the grapes to ensure they are picked on the verge of ripeness, and at cooler night times, to ensure a low alcohol wine. The grape must undergoes fermentation in steel inox tanks followed by 3 months in the barrel. Each bottle is hand-sealed in wax and embossed with the symbol of the winery, and the ancient Minoan symbol of fertility – the bee!
The 3.14 wine of the Domaine is a very elegant version of Vidiano that typically reflects the feminine side of the winemakers. Fine and round on the palate, despite a low alcohol level of 12%; a persistent finish and a nose which is not typical of natural wine, in being extremely clear and hinting directly at the fruity aromatic of Vidiano. Probably one of the most accessible natural wines on the market right now, even for non-connoisseurs of this emerging wine category. It has proven that Crete has caught up with the rest of the world by being able to produce wines reflecting their very own identity and terroir. A perfect introduction to natural wine.
The wine is oily and sticky in the glass, has low acidity, and is soft and smooth on the palate. With aromas of cooked apple and honey, and earthy grassy flavours, this wine is perfect with grilled white meats. Try this wine with roast pork and apricots, or a fresh green salad with grilled chicken and parmesan. The wine will also pair well with nuts, fruit and canapés as an aperitif.
