Gavalas Santorini Winery

Gavalas winery is one of the oldest and most prestigious wineries on the Island of Santorini, with a history of winemaking stretching back almost 300 years. Located in the small sleepy village of Megalochori, the original white-washed stone building is still used today by the family to store grapes, ferment and cellar wines. With rooms carved from the Santorini volcanic rock (bimsuff), the deep cool spaces are as effective today in supporting fine wine making, as they were 300 years ago.

History of Santorini Winery

The winery can also lay unequivocal claim to the islands oldest vines at 130 years of age, with ancient un-grafted root stock providing the grapes with intense minerality and terroir orientated flavours. George Gavalas and his son Vagelis are the fourth and fith generation wine makers at Gavalas winery. They harness the knowledge and understanding of Santorini's unique terroir from the family's long lineage, to show the finest representation of Assyrtiko wine on the island. Geroge and Vagelis work passionately to cultivate and preserve some of Santorini's rarest indigenous grapes of Mavrotragano, and they are the only winery to produce wines from Voudomato and Katsano grapes.

Trying one of our wines from Gavalas is not just an experience of drinking supreme quality fine wine, but is also chance to experience the powerful character of ancient wines unchanged for centuries.
